In the first two weeks of the 2018 tax season, IRS-trained volunteers serving the Midlands through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program have completed more than 750 tax returns for low-income households hoping for a much-needed refund. Volunteers are serving in 18 locations throughout the Midlands. Jessica Grote, director of financial stability programs for The Cooperative Ministry, coordinates the VITA program in partnership with United Way of the Midlands. In 2017, 7624 returns were prepared returning $1.93 million in tax credits to low-income households.
