The 2019 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program kicks off with Super Saturday this weekend, Saturday, Feb. 2, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at The Cooperative Ministry, 3821 W. Beltline Blvd., Columbia. The event has been relocated from Columbia’s Cecil Tillis Community Center, which is being used as an evacuee center for displaced residents of Allen Benedict Court apartments.
More than 100 taxpayers are expected to receive free tax preparation assistance on Saturday, saving an estimated $27,000 in preparation fees.
Following Super Saturday, about 200 IRS-trained volunteers will assist taxpayers at 18 Midlands locations from Monday, Feb. 4 through Monday, April 15. In 2018, VITA volunteers prepared 8,362 free tax returns, generating $5.6 million in refunds. The VITA program is administered by The Cooperative Ministry in partnership with United Way of the Midlands and the Internal Revenue Service.
